The New Seven Wonders of The World

On New Year’s Eve in 2006, Federico Mayor Zaragoza (Unesco’s last General Secretary) led the jury that picked out the 21 canditates to represent global heritage. Since then almost 100 million people have been voting via phone or Internet. The website New 7 Wonders was one of the most popular sites during the voting.

The new wonders were presented on a live gala in Lisboa, Portugal, on Saturday Night. The winners? The Great Wall in China, the city Petra in Jordan, the Statue of Christ (Christ Redeemer) in Brazil, Chichén Itzá in Mexico, Colloseum in Italy, Machu Picchu in Peru and Taj Mahal in India.

Some of the candidates that didn’t make it to the end were Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Alhambra in Spain, the Statue of Liberty in USA and Stonehenge in United Kingdom. Click here to see all the finalists and the seven winners.

The last seven wonders of the world were located in Greece, Egypt, Turkey and Iraq.

Erica, I enjoy your posts, your photography, and appreciate your passion for travel, which I share. Of the new seven wonders, I have only been to one so far, Chichén Itzá in Mexico, and can say that the site and the history are a wonder, but how do pick … there are so many. Even more impressive than the pyramid is the observatory. Visiting the site, you learn much about Mayan culture and history.

Thanks. You’re right about the seven wonders…how do you pick. I haven’t been to any of them yet, but Chitchén Itzá might be a good start. By the way, really nice photography on your website!
