Watch the Surfing Pros
1. Jaws
Peahi or “Jaws” is known as one of the best surfing spots in the world. The reef and rocks at Jaws are shaped in a way that it produces wide, high, near perfect surfing conditions that attract pro surfers for a few ideal days each winter. Non-experts can catch all the action onshore from a nearby bluff and watch the surfers getting towed-in to the powerful waves on jet-skis.
2. Shark Pit
Another popular surfing spot for experienced surfers, this break can get quite crowded on weekends. You’ll find Shark Pit at the south end of Lahaina, off Front Street. A word of caution: this aptly-named reef is also home to (usually harmless) whitetip sharks.
3. Launiopoko Beach Park
Located 3 miles south of Lahaina, this beach is one of the more popular surfing areas on the island of Maui. There are plenty of public washrooms, picnic tables, showers and kids’ areas which are ideal for families looking to park themselves for the day. Consequently, this surfing spot tends to be busy, but if you don’t mind the crowds and keep smiling, this is one beach surfers of every level can appreciate.
Maui offers many surfing spots for surfers of all levels. Seasonality plays a big role in the size of Hawaii’s waves so check the local surf reports or speak to an instructor to find the right beach for you. As always, stay safe and enjoy your surfing trip to Maui!
