A Guide to The Ruins of Ancient Greece

Greece is an incredible place to visit, especially for history enthusiasts. In fact, Greece is full of incredible archaeological ruins that bear testimony to the ancient Greek civilization. Dating back to around 1600 BCE, the Greeks helped shape the world we know today and majorly contributed philosophy, astronomy, and medicine. They were also pioneers in construction materials, engineering, mathematics, and architecture.

Here are some of the best ruins to visit and create great memories in Greece:

The Acropolis of Athens

In the Acropolis of Athens, numerous ancient ruins and incredible sites dominate the skyline of Athens, for instance, the Erechtheion, the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Theater, The Parthenon, and Herodotus.’ Odeum of Dionysus. The Acropolis is the highest point of Athens. This impressive modern building is entirely distinct from other ancient ruins in the Acropolis. The Acropolis Museum is an excellent place that displays bountiful treasures.

The Parthenon

The Parthenon is perhaps the greatest surviving building of ancient times. Its construction occurred when Athens was the center of the world’s culture. Every facility here was constructed in these times. It displays the perfect example of Doric architecture ever made. The Parthenon was built on the site of a Persian temple. It has served as a mosque, a Christian church, and a Greek temple. The construction functioned as a political representation of victory against Persia and a united classic identification rather than a temple for the goddess Athena.

Delphi

Delphi was viewed as the world’s capital, and pilgrims visited seeking guidance and wisdom from Apollo. The route to Delphi remains the same. You travel as you view the sites and the remains of treasures, Greek temples, and houses along the roads. Some remains are of the temple of Apollo, the sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, and the stadium of Delphi. Delphi archaeological Museum has an incredible view and the facades of the temple of Apollo and the frieze of the Siphnian treasury.

Theatre of Epidaurus

The theatre of Asclepius is a masterpiece of Greek architecture and is a famous attraction within the sanctuary. It is preserved adequately with Performances and proportions. This theatre is among other remains in the sanctuary where Asclepius resided in Epidaurus. Performances are done in the theatre every summer, and visitors are welcome.

Knossos

Knossos is the oldest European city and an archaeological site of the bronze age. The site hosts remnants of a palace, among other buildings. These ruins are incredibly vast. Some of the contained pillars were reconstructed in the 20th century. A lot of treasures are displayed in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Knossos is a short distance from the port city of Heraklion in Crete.
